Chromatography is the separation of a mixture by passing it in solution or suspension or as a vapor (as in gas chromatography) through a medium in which the components move at different rates. Thin-layer chromatography is a special type of chromatography used for separating and identifying mixtures that are or can be colored especially pigments.

High-performance liquid chromatography has stood on a rock laborious foundation and has seen many inventions that have met the growing expectations in separation techniques. It has been employed in a very wide selection of analytical strategies and it is not possible to convey a comprehensive set of examples that will illustrate its wide applicability in every type of matrices.
